Connect. Belong. Explore.
Why Friendship, Connection and Shared Experiences Matter for Mental Wellbeing. At Veterans Voyage CIC, the words at the heart of our logo are simple: Connect. Belong. Explore.
They are more than just a tagline.
They reflect the reasons Veterans Voyage CIC was created and the impact that friendship, shared experiences and community can have on mental wellbeing.
Alongside them sit another phrase that means a great deal to us: Journeys Together. Memories That Matter. Because for many people within our armed forces community, meaningful connection and positive shared experiences can genuinely change how someone feels about themselves and the world around them.
Connect
Life can become smaller without us even realising it. Over time, many veterans and family members experience:
- loneliness
- reduced confidence
- bereavement
- ill health
- caring responsibilities
- social isolation
Friendship groups can drift. Routines change. People stop travelling, socialising or attending events. Sometimes the hardest part is simply taking that first step back into the world again. Connection does not always need to be complicated. Sometimes it starts with:
- a conversation on the coach
- sharing a meal
- laughing together
- meeting someone who understands military life
- realising you are not the only one who has felt isolated
Human connection matters deeply to mental wellbeing, and often it is the small moments that make the biggest difference.
Belong
One of the things many people miss after military service is the sense of belonging. Being part of something. Feeling included. Having people around you who understand. That feeling can become difficult to replace. At Veterans Voyage CIC, we believe nobody should feel left behind.
Our trips are not simply about sightseeing or holidays; they are about creating welcoming environments where people feel comfortable, valued and included. For some people on our first coach holiday (organised under Plymouth Armed Forces Veterans Breakfast Club) in April 2026, this was the first time they had travelled in years. Many arrived feeling nervous or uncertain. By the end of the trip:
- friendships had formed
- phone numbers had been exchanged
- confidence had grown
- laughter had returned
Sometimes belonging begins with something as simple as someone saving you a seat at breakfast.
Explore
Exploring new places can also help people reconnect with themselves. Travel creates opportunities to:
- build confidence
- rediscover independence
- create positive memories
- experience joy again
- break routines and isolation
Whether visiting historical sites, seaside towns, memorials or simply enjoying the journey itself, shared experiences can lift mood and improve wellbeing in ways that are often underestimated. Our first veterans coach holiday included:
- the National Memorial Arboretum
- Warwick Castle
- Leicester
- the National Space Centre
- Cadbury World
- coach singalongs
- countless cups of tea…or ‘similar’
- endless laughter
But what mattered most was not necessarily where we went. It was how people felt while they were there. Journeys Together. Memories That Matter. Mental wellbeing is not only about formal services or clinical support. It is also about:
- friendship
- inclusion
- community
- purpose
- feeling remembered
- having something to look forward to
At Veterans Voyage CIC, we believe shared experiences matter. Because sometimes, improving wellbeing starts with something very simple:
A seat on the coach.
A shared laugh.
A new friendship.
A journey together.
